desire to open a larger Maternity Hospital in the populous

Western District of Victoria, and as no premises are avail-

-able, they have applied for the grant of a piece of land

adjoining the Chinese Public Dispensary of the district. The

building which holds the Dispensary has not proved entirely satisfactory for the purpose, and the Committee would take the

opportunity of re-arranging it in connection with the new

proposals. If the land is granted to them on the usual terms, they are prepared to expend $20,000 on the work.

With this to encourage them the Committee

The site 7,000 square feet appears colour-

-ed red on the enclosed plan, the Dispensary standing on

Inland Lot No. 1793 adjoining it. It is the only piece of

vacent Crown Land in the vicinity, but its limited area pre-

-cludes it from consideration in connection with any proposed

Government building. It is well adapted for the erection of

Chinese houses: but the district is already a very crowded one

The Committee may not be able to utilise the whole area at

once, but there can be little doubt that it will not be too

large for their requirements in the near future: and in any event the cramping of an institution of this nature is to be deprecated. I therefore recommend that the application be

approved, on the following conditions:

1.

Term of lease 75 years.

2.

No premium.

3.

Crown Rent 81 a year.

4.

Except with the previous consent of the Governor-in-Council, the lot is to be used only for the purpose of a Maternity Hospital in connection with the Chinese Public Dis- -pensaries Organization. In the event of this condition being infringed, the lot with ali improvements to revert unconditionally to the

Government.
